ASJA Conference Changes With the Times http://www.asja.org/calendar/wcmain.php America's oldest and largest non-fiction writer's conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt in New York City's Grand Hyatt Hotel on May 18-19, and the "Power Up Your Writing Career: Success in Today's Print and Online Markets" title shows how the American Society of Journalists and Authors has changed over the last 30 years. Keynote speakers Barnes & Noble (and bn.com) CEO Leonard Riggio and author/editor/publisher/columnist James Brady. Attendees can choose from 25 panels covering online work, book proposals, a wide range of writing specialties (e.g., Writing Essays and Op-Ed Pieces), freelancing as a profession, book proposals, and strategies for increasing your sales. A special hands-on session on negotiating techniques conducted by a master negotiator/lawyer, a session on how writers can land better fees and contracts is also available. The Saturday session costs $195 to $230, with individual workshops availabe a la carte for $75.00-85.00 each. --Peggy LeTrent Pike's Peak Conference Piques Our Interest http://www.ppwc.net/ Hailed by Writer's Digest Magazine as one of the best U.S.-based writers conference, the Pikes Peak Writers Conference will be held in Colorado Springs from April 27-29. "Left Behind" author Jerry Jenkins and "Demolition Angel" author Robert Crais will headline this multi-genre commercial fiction conference, which also boasts numerous literary agents and editors from companies such as Random House and St. Martin's Press. Attendees can attend any of the forty-six workshops, such as "Common Problems of Beginners," "Writing Dialogue," "The Dreaded Synopsis," "Writing Multiple Genres" and "From Mickey Mouse to Word Wizard." Meetings with, and readings for, editors and agents are also available on a first-come appointment basis.. It will be led by top editors and experts such as The New York Times' William G. Connolly and Bruce DeSilva of the Associated Press. Guest speakers (including Bob Baker of the Los Angeles Times) will be talking about editing, headlines and other topics, which will be announced in the upcoming weeks. Print-on-demand publishers such as Infinity Publishing and Xlibris will work with participants on understanding the business side of writing and weighing their options. Critically acclaimed Romance author Sharon Sala (aka Dinah McCall) will address the Smoky Mountain Romance Writers' 2001 Mountain Laurel Conference slated for Knoxville, Tennessee on May 4. While next year's editorial roster is not set, this past summer's conference included editors from high-paying publications like Redbook, This Old House, Fitness, Discover, Working Mother, Context, and HealthScout.com. In keeping with the group's mission of "teaching and inspiring journalists and media leaders," the seminar will cover the different Web writing forms, what works and why in online writing, and how to develop your own style and approach to writing online news.
